The Maremma Originated in Italy.
For thousands of years, Italian shepherds have relied on these dogs to protect their stock. Today, the Maremma is also widely used to guard livestock throughout Europe, Australia, Canada and the US. They are incredible guardians with our goats, sheep, and poultry, and get along well with our herding and pet dogs as well. We are so lucky to have them. |

Livestock Guardians
In comparison to some other LGD breeds, Maremmas are known as "close guardians". Rather than patrolling a perimeter, Maremmas generally prefer to remain near the livestock they are guarding. This was perfect for our small farm, as we only have 11 acres but a heavy predator load including Bears, Cougars, Coyotes and Bobcats.

Considering a Maremma?
We could not imagine running our farm without our Maremmas, but this breed is not for everyone. They bark , are independent thinkers, and although smaller than some other LGD's - they are big! They are also very protective of the animals and people to whom they are bonded.
